David Jellema

David Jellema - Musician for Thrift Set Orchestra David Jellema plays the cornet and clarinet, and may sing an occasional vocal for the Thrift Set Orchestra. Born and raised in the Washington DC area, Jellema began studying cornet in grade school, but pursued musical interests outside of formal education by studying vintage recordings and by sitting in with local dixieland jazz bands. After a bachelors education in classical civilizations, and a masters in library services, Jellema’s career moves spanned overseas refugee relief work in the Middle East, then archival work at the Smithsonian Institution’s American History Museum and at the Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University. Jellema has toured and recorded with an experimental rock and numerous jazz groups in Tennessee before moving summer 2007 to San Antonio to play at Jim Cullum’s Landing. He has lived in Austin since autumn 2009 and plays music full time, appearing as member and frequent guest with a dozen groups in the area. His musical influences include Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett, and Jack Teagarden.

Arrangements are done by Jon Doyle, Lyon Graulty, David Jellema, Mark ‘Speedy’ Gonzales, and Ryan Gould.

Original compositions in the band are done by Jon Doyle, Albanie Falletta, and David Jellema.
